Jana Boulton, 23, was a cystic fibrosis patient who in 2002 underwent a double lung transplant.  On September 25th, 2003 Jana passed away.
Jana was certainly more than a patient, she was a sister, a daughter, a neice and an aunt.  She was a happy, free spirit whose laughter was infectious.  She was involved with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and helped to raise awareness of the disease, but she was also a member of the volunteer fire department and involved with the community.  Even when she was fighting a battle for her life, she wanted to spend her time helping others.
Jana was a college student who liked to write and share poetry, and never missed a chance to sit and watch a rainbow in the sky.
Jana's CAN DO spirit lives on in the hearts of her family and friends.  This scholarship fund will help others have a chance to live their dreams and follow their rainbows.

Jana's Bluegrass Connection: Jennifer Baum, Studio Manager of Boulton Beach Studios (which produces the 'Blades Of Blue' radio program) is Jana's sister. Boulton Beach Studios is named for Boulton's Beach Road where the family grew up.
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disease affecting approximately 30,000 children and adults in the United States. A defective gene causes the body to produce an abnormally thick, sticky mucus that clogs the lungs and leads to life-threatening lung infections. These thick secretions also obstruct the pancreas, preventing digestive enzymes from reaching the intestines to help break down and absorb food.
More than 10 million Americans are unknowing, symptomless carriers of the defective CF gene. An individual must inherit two defective CF genes -- one from each parent -- to have CF. Each time two carriers conceive, there is a 25 percent chance that their child will have CF; a 50 percent chance that the child will be a carrier of the CF gene; and a 25 percent chance that the child will be a non-carrier.
According to the CF Foundation's National Patient Registry, the median age of survival for a person with
CF is 33.4 years.
